Our Mission The mission of Lan Su Chinese Garden is to cultivate an oasis of tranquil beauty and harmony to inspire, engage and educate our global community in the appreciation of a richly authentic Chinese culture. Our Story Opening in September 2000, Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland's greatest treasures and most interesting sites to see while visiting Portland. A result of a collaboration between the cities of Portland and Suzhou, our sister city in China's Jiangsu province that's famous for its beautiful Ming dynasty gardens, Lan Su was built by Chinese artisans from Suzhou and is one the most authentic Chinese gardens outside of China. Our Vision Lan Su envisions a world where people of all backgrounds are valued; all cultures are celebrated; and community members have a deeper, more immersive world view. Our Name The garden's name represents this relationship: sounds from both Portland and Suzhou are combined to form Lan Su. "Lan" (蘭 ) is also the Chinese word for "Orchid" and "Su" (蘇) is the word for "Arise" or "Awaken," so the garden's name can also be interpreted poetically as "Garden of Awakening Orchids." LANAKAM S.A. was founded in 1941 by Elias Kamsizoglou, under the name "General Electric and Trading Company SA". The aim of the company was to trade electrical equipment. In the following decades the company name was changed several times due to its new business activities; such as trading yarns and fabrics. Later on, the company entered the textile manufacturing business with three factories which fabricated: 1. Cotton Textiles 2. Wool Textiles & Blended Woolen 3. Wool & Blended Penie The textile products which were manufactured were traded in Greece and worldwide. Finally, in 1994 the company changed its name to Lanakam SA, which has up to now. The company name comes from two words, LANA which means in Italian wool and KAM from the surname of the founder Elias Kamsizoglou. Between 1983-1998 the labor costs were highly increased; 77% of the production costs was labor. Therefore the company was forced to minimize production, and extend its activity in the field of fashion. In 2002 the company stops manufacturing activities and focus in the distribution of apparel and accessories. Up to now the company has signed contracts with many apparel and accessories labels. In 2011, Lanakam S.A. expanded its business in the distribution of outdoor heating and cooling products.
