Das Leopold Museum beherbergt mit rund 6.000 Werken eine der weltweit bedeutendsten Sammlungen österreichischer Kunst der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und der Moderne. An keinem anderen Ort kann der Kunstbegriff und die Geisteswelt von „Wien um 1900“ so unmittelbar erlebt und kunstgeschichtliche Entwicklungen vom Biedermeier zum Stimmungsimpressionismus oder vom Expressionismus zur neuen Sachlichkeit so tiefgehend verfolgt werden. Der Bestand des Leopold Museum geht auf die Sammlertätigkeit des Ehepaars Rudolf und Elisabeth Leopold – beide promovierte Augenärzte – zurück, das diese einzigartige Sammlung ab den 1950er-Jahren im Laufe von fünf Jahrzehnten mit großer Kennerschaft anlegte.
