La LICRA est une des plus anciennes associations militant à travers le monde contre le racisme, l’antisémitisme et les discriminations C’est à l’initiative du journaliste Bernard Lecache, que des femmes et des hommes, épris de justice et soucieux de défendre la dignité humaine, décidèrent au cours de l’année 1927 de s’associer pour lutter contre l’antisémitisme. Dès 1934, alors que grandissaient les menaces nazies et fascistes, ils étendirent leur action à la lutte contre le racisme et les discriminations. La LICRA porte ces combats au nom des principes énoncés dans les Déclarations des droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen de 1789 et 1793 et dans la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme de 1948. Elle les inscrit au-dessus de tout esprit partisan, indépendamment de tout parti politique ou organisation confessionnelle. Elle mène ces actions en France et à l’étranger par le biais de sections, dont les bénévoles sont les maillons essentiels. La LICRA milite pour une égalité des droits entre les êtres humains, œuvre à un rapprochement des peuples, et agit en faveur du respect et de la promotion de la laïcité. C’est en intervenant auprès des pouvoirs publics, en alertant l’opinion et les médias, en apportant aide et soutien aux victimes, en participant à l’éducation citoyenne de la jeunesse, qu’elle s’attache à faire vivre ces idéaux. La LICRA est ainsi forte de son histoire, de son esprit de révolte qui a présidé à sa création, de ses convictions universalistes, du dévouement des femmes et des hommes qu’elle mobilise, de leur engagement anonyme et quotidien depuis 1927.
