A Magyar Államkincstár önálló jogi személyiséggel rendelkező, országos hatáskörű központi költségvetési szerv. 1996. január 1-jétől végzi az államháztartásról szóló törvényben meghatározott feladatait 19 megyei igazgatóság közreműködésével. A Magyar Államkincstár küldetése: a közpénzek ellenőrzött kifizetése. A Kincstár a felelős szerv az állami költségvetés végrehajtása során az előirányzat gazdálkodás kontrolljáért, a számviteli elszámolásokért, valamint a költségvetés végrehajtásához kapcsolódó adatszolgáltatásokért. Nettó módon biztosítja a költségvetésből juttatott támogatásokat a helyi önkormányzatok, a többcélú kistérségi társulások és az egészségügyi intézmények részére, és ellenőrzi azok felhasználását. A Mezőgazdasági és Vidékfejlesztési Hivatal integrálásával 2017. január 1-jétől a Magyar Államkincstár kifizető ügynökségként látja el az Európai Unió Közös Agrárpolitikájában meghatározott források, valamint a nemzeti agrár-vidékfejlesztési támogatások kifizetését. Az Országos Nyugdíjbiztosítási Főigazgatóság 2017. november 1-i beolvadását követően feladatai közé tartozik a társadalombiztosítási és családtámogatási ellátórendszerek működtetése. A kincstár állami pénzbeli ellátási folyósítási, irányítási, szakigazgatási feladatai gyakorlatilag az ország teljes lakosságára kiterjednek. A Magyar Államkincstár a megyeszékhelyeken lévő állampénztári irodákban, valamint kirendeltségein és értékesítési pontjain állampapír forgalmazással és ahhoz kapcsolódó számlavezetéssel áll ügyfelei rendelkezésére. Számla szerződés birtokában az ügyfeleknek lehetőségük van a Kincstár elektronikus ( WebKincstár , MobilKincstár , TeleKincstár ) szolgáltatásait is igénybe venni, mellyel gyorsan és kényelmesen intézhetik otthonról befektetési ügyeiket.
