Marine Mammal Support Organisation is a non-profit and volunteer run organisation, dedicated to promoting the welfare of captive marine species exhibited within zoos, marine parks and dolphinariums. Marine species suffer in captive conditions, as their housing can never adequately mimic that of the species natural environment. In a perfect world, no marine species should live in a barren exhibit thats often no larger than a swimming pool, preventing them from displaying their natural behaviors and leading full, enriched lives. What We Do: Our campaigns are organised into short term and long term goals. In the short term, we focus on improving the welfare of animals in critically poor conditions, by providing soft substances, removable furniture, additional objects that will provide enrichment for the species, and shelter/shade from the sun and other adverse weather conditions. Our long term goals consider whats in the best interest of the marine species. If the facility where they reside can not provide them with suitable housing then we seek to relocate the marine species to another facility or sanctuary where they will be able to live out their remaining years in peace with their physical and psychological needs met. Sadly, some marine species can never be rehabilitated from captive to wild. Such as polar bears. This is because cubs learn their survival skills from their mother, in a captive environment they are unable to learn these life skills their wild counterparts rely on. Our legal team of professional lawyers and law students provide us with the insight needed to secure the best outcomes on behalf of the species we are working with. Their legal knowledge enables us to lobby the governments of countries we are working in, by drafting proposed amendments to the existing animal welfare legislation which are often outdated and offer limited protection to captive species.
