Max Planck Institute for Human Development

The Max Planck Institute for Human Development is dedicated to the study of human development and education, as well as human-machine interaction. Researchers of various disciplines – including psychology, education, sociology, medicine, history, economics, computer science, and mathematics – work together on interdisciplinary projects at the Berlin Institute. The research questions they examine include how people make effective decisions even under time pressure and information overload, how the interaction between behaviour and brain function changes over the lifespan, as well as how human emotions change in a historical context and how they have affected the course of history itself and what social innovations and challenges come with digitalization.

Max Planck Institute for Physics

The Max Planck Institute for Physics is one of the most renowned research institutions in particle physics. We explore the smallest building blocks of matter – elementary particles – and their interactions, aiming at answering some of the fundamental questions on the constituents of the universe: What is the nature of dark matter? Why is there hardly any antimatter in the universe? What are the mechanisms behind the violent processes in cosmic objects like black holes or gamma-ray bursts?

Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials

Are you aware that the steel industry alone contributes to 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions? And imagine that the average lifespan of a smartphone is only 3 years, and without recycling, up to 50 different elements are lost, many of which are precious metals or rare earths. Established in 1917 with a focus on steels and other metallic alloys, our institute underwent a significant transformation, reflecting our unwavering commitment to pioneering basic research on sustainable materials for energy, mobility, infrastructure, manufacturing, and medicine. With our 350-strong international team from over 35 countries, we are tackling one of today's most pressing challenges: transforming materials, which are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental decline, into green resources that drive a truly circular economy. We delve into the very structure of materials down to the atomic scale, crafting alloys that excel in real-world conditions. From using hydrogen instead of fossil fuels to extract metals, to devising endlessly recyclable materials and finding ways to extend material lifespans while reducing waste, we are at the forefront of innovation. Moreover, employing advanced techniques like artificial intelligence and machine learning, we are revolutionizing material production, making it more efficient than ever before.

Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law

research

Procedural law matters – this could be the leitmotif for the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law. (hereafter referred to as MPI Luxembourg) The MPI Luxembourg is a legal research Institute located in Luxembourg’s quarter of Kirchberg. Founded in 2012, it is operated by the Max Planck Society (MPG), Germany’s foremost provider of basic research in science and humanities, and funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, as a part of a broader strategy of the local government to develop Luxembourg as a centre for academic excellence and higher education. The MPI Luxembourg is the fifth institute established outside the German borders, and the first to focus on law. Since its foundation in 2012, the MPI Luxembourg has established itself at the forefront of enquiries on procedural law, and has integrated into the wider research and academic community in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in Europe and globally. The MPI Luxembourg investigates modern tendencies in dispute resolution mechanisms from different perspectives, especially those of public international law, and European and comparative civil procedural law. Anchored in truly international and interdisciplinary foundations, the research projects developed at the MPI Luxembourg investigate the grounds of the procedures governing international courts and tribunals as it tackles, at the same time, the various contemporary forms of dispute settlement, such as collective litigation, online dispute resolution and mediation. Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics

The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics explores the creation of novel materials and devices, and systems of devices that could allow for innovative technologies, particularly those that could enable advanced, highly energy-efficient, computing and memory-storage technologies. These include bio-inspired materials and thinking systems, and materials and devices that can support quantum technologies. The Institute has been entirely rebuilt with modernized offices, laboratories and a state-of-the-art clean-room, and an RBS facility, that are designed to encourage interactions and interdisciplinary research. The Institute is comprised of four independent departments which are closely coupled to one another. The institute has openings for outstanding Ph.D. students, post-doctoral researchers, student interns, technicians, and engineers. Current scientific projects include within the Nano-systems from ions, spins, and electrons department (Director: Stuart Parkin): spintronics, spin-orbitronics, chiraltronics, non-collinear spin textures, Racetrack Memory, atomically engineered thin film materials, topological materials, the electric field induced transformation of the structure and electronic properties of thin films to create complex three-dimensional meso-structures from the film’s surface. The Nanophotonics, Integration, and Neural Technology department focuses on multi-technology implantable devices that stimulate and record neurons and integrated photonic devices for 3D micro-displays.

Max Planck Society

The Max Planck Society is an internationally recognized, autonomous science organization with a longstanding tradition. “Insight must precede application” – the guiding principle of the Max Planck Society are words spoken by the physicist that our organization was named after. Excellent minds, a high degree of freedom and outstanding work conditions create the foundation for basic research at the very highest level. And thus 20 Nobel Prize Laureates are among the ranks of the Max Planck Society to date. The Max Planck Society with its 86 Max Planck Institutes and facilities is the international flagship for German science: in addition to five foreign institutions, it operates another 20 Max Planck Centers with research institutions such as the Princeton University in the USA, the Paris University Science Po in France, the University College London in UK, and the University of Tokyo in Japan.
