The Novo Nordisk Foundation is a Danish foundation with corporate interests. The Foundation has two objectives: 1) to provide a stable basis for the commercial and research activities of the companies in the Novo Group(*); and 2) to support scientific, humanitarian and social purposes. The Foundation has a 90-year history and the vision is to contribute significantly to research and development that improves the health and welfare of people. Since 2010, the Foundation has donated more than EUR 2.1 billion (DKK 16 billion) for research, innovation, treatment, education and humanitarian and social purposes. Through its holding company Novo Holdings A/S the Foundation is a major shareholder in Novo Nordisk A/S and Novozymes A/S as well as more than 75 other companies. The Foundation awards grants for research, primarily at public universities and hospitals. While the main focus lies within biomedicine and biotechnology research, the Foundation also awards grants for research in general practice and family medicine, nursing and art history. All researchers have full publishing freedom and can decide their own research priorities. No Novo Group(*) company has preferential access to research results funded by grants from the Foundation. In recent years, the Foundation has increased its focus on innovation, diabetes treatment and grants for humanitarian and social purposes. In 2016 the Foundation awarded EUR 400 million (DKK 2.945 billion) to the Capital Region of Denmark to establish Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, a diabetes treatment and research institution. The Foundation gets its income from dividends and returns on investments in life-science companies and financial investments made by Novo Holdings A/S, a private limited liability company wholly owned by the Foundation and the holding company in the Novo Group and responsible for managing the Foundations assets. Founded in 2005 and situated in Zurich, Switzerland, Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation (NNHF) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to defining and funding sustainable programmes which improve access to quality care benefitting people with haemophilia and allied bleeding disorders in developing and emerging countries. In collaboration with local partners and internationally renowned experts, we address three focus areas: capacity building; diagnosis and registry; awareness and advocacy. Robin Covey, Novo’s owner, has been a restaurant proprietor on the Central Coast since the 1980s. In 2003, he opened the award-winning Novo Restaurant, in downtown San Luis Obispo. The name Novo comes from the Brazilian Portuguese word meaning “new.” For Robin, the expression perfectly describes the eclectic, global, and inspiring atmosphere that he and his staff have created in the iconic Cigar Factory space. The different menus at NOVO give you the best of both worlds - variety and dependability. The salads, sates (grilled, skewered meats) and a few other favorite dishes are constants on the menu, and are available from open to close. Meanwhile, the specialized lunch, dinner and brunch menus offer the opportunity to experience a changing variety of foods and tastes made possible by the creative forces at NOVO. Chef Ben graduated from the California Culinary Academy in 1996. He worked in the Bay Area and Central Valley for several years before moving to the Central Coast in 2003. Ben was hired as the chef at Novo prior to the restaurant's opening which allowed him to play a roll in the original menu design, while building new relationships with the local farmers in the area. In 2008, Ben co-founded Two Cooks Catering. After three years of catering throughout the Central Coast, Ben began teaching at Cuesta College. Whole foods along with meat and seafood butchery were the focus of his curriculum. He returned to Novo in 2013, picking up where he left off working as the kitchen manager for 2 years before taking over as Executive Chef. Ben lives in San Luis Obispo with his wife and two boys.
