The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is the national public health institute of South Africa, providing reference microbiology, virology, epidemiology, surveillance and public health research and training to support the government’s response to communicable disease threats. The NICD assists in the planning of policies and programmes to support communicable disease control and elimination efforts, and provides numerous specialised diagnostic services. A critical role of the NICD is to respond to outbreaks through the Outbreak Response Unit and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). The NICD houses biosafety level (BSL) 3 laboratories and the only suited high-containment BSL 4 laboratory in Africa, making it a premier research, surveillance and diagnostics institution in the area of communicable diseases. The Sequencing Core Facility at the NICD conducts next-generation sequencing for diagnosis and outbreak support. Several NICD laboratories are World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating partners, providing reference diagnostic services and surveillance for communicable diseases such as influenza, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis and measles, among others. Surveillance for malaria and arbovirus vectors is a key function of the NICD, which also houses five insectaries for culturing a wide range of mosquito species that are of public health importance.

The National Institute for Direct Instruction is a non-profit organization dedicated to... 1. Providing continuous administrative and curricular support to schools and districts as they implement Direct Instruction (DI) programs. 2. Conducting, promoting and publicizing high-quality research on the effects of DI implementations. NIFDI is uniquely qualified for these tasks as its founding members include the creators of DI. NIFDI's implementation support consultants are experienced teachers with advanced degrees and five to 25 years teaching experience in DI. Many of the senior consultants are co-authors of the DI programs. NIFDI's leaders have more than 30 years experience with school and district implementations of DI in all types of environments. Since its formal creation in 1997, NIFDI has supported DI implementations in 18 states (California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin), the territory of Guam and Cape York Australia. In Guam, NIFDI implemented the comprehensive Direct Instruction model in 24 elementary schools and all middle schools for several years. In Texas, NIFDI works with IDEA Schools, Inc. to implement the comprehensive Direct Instruction model in 10 elementary schools and a Special Education DI intervention in IDEA high schools.

The National Institute for Jail Operations (NIJO) is dedicated to serving those that operate jails, detention, and correctional facilities. Training is often based on best practices rather than case law due to administrators not having the time, resources, or ability to research relevant case law training. Policies, procedures, and training must be centered and built around current case law and statutes. Recognizing the enormous liability and litigation facing administrations and, in an industry where resources are scarce, NIJO provides a compilation of legal-based resources specific to various state statute requirements or Circuit Courts of Appeal. By having these guidelines, we can provide agencies access to a database of industry standards, the ability to conduct self-audits, customizable training, legal consultation, and the opportunity to have their facility Nationally Accredited. Established in 2011, NIJO is the only organization to offer resources under one umbrella with legal-based emphasis.

The National Institute for STEM Education (NISE) embodies a movement to clearly define the practices of a successful STEM program and those of the classroom teacher by identifying the fundamental actions and pedagogical strategies that are aligned with the research supporting an effective STEM classroom. The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is Australia’s centre of excellence in education, training and performance in contemporary circus. The institute is internationally renowned and offers Australia's only Bachelor of Circus Arts.
