Si l’Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur (OCA) possède un patrimoine architectural et scientifique remarquable, ouvert au public, il n’en est pas moins un opérateur de recherche en sciences de la Terre et de l’Univers reconnu internationalement. L’OCA est un des 28 Observatoires des sciences de l’Univers français chargés du recueil continu et systématique de données observationnelles de la Terre et de l’Univers. Son rôle est d’explorer, de comprendre et de valoriser les sciences de la Terre et de l’Univers, que ce soit en astrophysique, en sciences de la Terre, mais aussi dans les sciences connexes comme la mécanique, le traitement du signal, ou l’optique. Pour produire et exploiter les données recueillies par les grands instruments au sol et dans l’espace, l’OCA met en œuvre une approche globale combinant théorie, modélisation, observation, analyse et constitution de banques de données. L’OCA contribue à son environnement sociétal en transmettant les questionnements et les développements de la science qu’il produit aujourd’hui. D’une part, les laboratoires dont l’OCA est tutelle contribuent activement à la formation universitaire à l’Université Côte d’Azur, à tous les niveaux, depuis la licence jusqu’au doctorat. D’autre part, l’OCA est très impliqué dans sa mission de diffusion des connaissances vers tous les publics, profitant de la combinaison unique entre son patrimoine exceptionnel et les recherches contemporaines. L’Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur est un Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers (OSU) et un établissement public à caractère administratif dirigé par Stéphane Mazevet. Doté d’une autonomie administrative et financière, l’OCA regroupe et pilote les activités de recherches en sciences de la Terre et de l’Univers au sein d’Université Côte d’Azur dont il est établissement composante. L’OCA est ainsi tutelle de trois unités mixte de recherche : Artémis (CNRS-UCA-OCA), Géoazur (CNRS-UCA-OCA-IRD) et Lagrange (CNRS-UCA-OCA).
