In 1551, St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, opened a "Schola grammaticae et humanitatis pro iuvenibus" in Rome. Within a short span of time, it became the Roman College and in 1556 started conferring academic degrees according to pontifical norms. The Collegio included all grades of schooling, and it is its university division of philosophy and theology that was given Papal approval in 1556 that made it the first university founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). In 1584 the university was given a grandiose home by Pope Gregory XIII, after whom it was renamed. Since 1930 the Pontifical Gregorian University has been located at Piazza della Pilotta, 4 - Rome, Italy. Its international faculty serves around 3800 students from over 150 countries.

The Pontifical University of Santa Croce was born from the desire of St. Josemaría Escrivá, Founder of Opus Dei, to create a center of higher ecclesiastical studies in Rome at the service of the whole Church. With prayer and patient work, he laid the foundations of the current University of the Holy Cross. St. Josemaria’s first successor, Bishop Álvaro del Portillo, with the support of Bl. John Paul II, brought that desire to completion, inaugurating the Roman Academic Center with a Holy Mass dedicated to the Holy Spirit on October 15th, 1984. Thanks to the assistance of the University of Navarre's ecclesiastical Schools, the institution was destined to become a center of study and research, committed to the task of theological, philosophical, and canonical formation. Bishops around the world choose to send both priests and seminarians to Rome from their respective diocese, in the hope of providing them with a profound academic and spiritual formation. In this way, Rome becomes a central meeting place, strengthening fidelity and unity with the Holy See. The Pontifical University of Santa Croce is currently comprised of the Schools of Theology, Canon Law, Philosophy, and Church Communications; the Higher Institute of Religious Studies “all’Apollinare” (ISSRA) is also an essential element. The Academic Building is found in Palazzo S. Apollinare in Rome, while the Research Center and the Library are located on Via dei Farnesi.

Our University is an important national center for research in social sciences, natural sciences, health, economics, agriculture, philosophy, theology, arts and literature. Located in a young and geographically distant country, we believe that maintaining an active exchange program with foreign universities is crucial for academic development. This interest has lead to the establishment of academic exchange agreements with more than three hundred universities in forty-six countries. Each year a growing number of students and professors, largely from the United States, Europe, and Asia study at our university. We believe that the progress of Chile relies on the contribution that its universities can make through education, the generation of new knowledge, public policy proposals and the promotion of technology transfer. Our University has taken on this challenge as part of its mission. We invite you to be part of this effort.
