Jesteśmy 101-letnim instytutem naukowym o zasięgu ogólnokrajowym. Prowadzimy wszechstronne badania budowy geologicznej kraju, których celem jest praktyczne wykorzystanie zgromadzonej wiedzy w gospodarce i ochronie środowiska. Zapewniamy bezpieczeństwo państwa w zakresie gospodarki zasobami surowców mineralnych i wód podziemnych, monitorujemy stan środowiska geologicznego i ostrzegamy o zagrożeniach naturalnych. Obok działalności naukowej we wszystkich dziedzinach nowoczesnej geologii, wypełniamy również zadania państwowej służby geologicznej i państwowej służby hydrogeologicznej. W głównej siedzibie w Warszawie i 7 jednostkach regionalnych (Gdańsk, Kielce, Kraków, Lublin, Sosnowiec, Szczecin, Wrocław) zatrudnionych jest około 900 osób. Dzięki prowadzonym przez nas badaniom zostały odkryte najważniejsze polskie złoża surowców mineralnych – miedzi, srebra, siarki rodzimej, węgla kamiennego, węgla brunatnego, soli kamiennej, soli potasowych, rud żelaza, tytanu, wanadu, cynku, ołowiu.
