Paws, Inc., was founded in 1981 by cartoonist Jim Davis, as a creative house to support Garfield licensing. Today, the company, located in rural Indiana, handles not only the creative angle but also the business concerns of the corpulent kitty worldwide. Paws, Inc. does business in 111 countries and partners with dozens of agents in every major business center in the world. About 400 licensees work with Paws' staff of account managers and business administrators to ensure quality control of the Garfield brand. Paws' staff of artists, writers, designers, web designers, 3D artists, animators, and A/V engineers support the creativity that goes into each Garfield product, promotion, and entertainment venue. Technically, Paws is heads and tails above the typical licensor. Paws created software specifically for the purpose of smoothing communications between licensor and licensee. Paws Licensing Support System (PLSS) was one of the first Internet-accessible art banks and business support systems in the country. PLSS users can access Garfield art, conduct approvals, and access sales tools. Jim Davis, the creator of GARFIELD, guides the pencil that draws the comic strip and is the guiding force at Paws. He is involved in the day-to-day business and takes personal responsibility for shaping and growing Garfield. Paws, Inc. is the sole owner of the copyrights and trademarks for GARFIELD and GARFIELD Characters.
