It is characterized by widespread injury of the alveolar–capillary membrane, resulting in protein rich noncardiogenic pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs) and acute respiratory failure (ARF). ARDS results in severe hypoxaemia, which is refractory to oxygen treatment and requires assisted ventilation.
