Associations like the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns exist in 49 states and were originally formed for the purpose of representing municipal government interests before the state legislature. This role soon expanded to include representation before the executive and state administrative agencies as well as the provision of technical assistance, information sharing, and training to assist municipal officials in fulfilling their responsibilities. The strengths and effectiveness of the League is derived from pulling together its member municipalities and merging their divergent opinions and needs into a cohesive expression of municipal views, interests, and initiatives. Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner (RIOPC) serves as the definitive resource for information on and the interpretation of Council on Postsecondary Education policy for public higher education. RIOPC looks for shared opportunities to advance the objectives of postsecondary education with the public and independent institutions. The Commissioner of Postsecondary Education is the state’s higher education executive officer. In fulfilling this role, the Commissioner works closely with the presidents of the state higher education institutions to determine the benefits or disadvantages of proposed new programs, departments, division, courses of study within the scope and role adopted by the Council on Postsecondary Education and in developing tables of organization. RIOPC relies on the collegial relations and civil discussions among the members of the postsecondary community and with important stakeholders from business, government, and PK-12 education.

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is governed by a Board of Directors. The RISPCA is not affiliated with any national, state, or government agencies and relies on private donations, special events, and grants for operating expenses. The Society was the first humane organization in Rhode Island and is the 3rd oldest humane organization in the United States. At 140 years old, we are the only animal rescue organization in the state of Rhode Island that is empowered to investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect. The Society is charged with the sole purpose of protecting animal life in all situations that might endanger them. We are dedicated to crusading for the rights and welfare of all animals great and small through legal, educational, and investigative means. Regardless of need, the mission of the RISPCA is to safeguard the well being of all creatures and advocate for the rights and humane treatment of those who cannot speak for themselves. The Rhode Island SPCA has an “open door” policy. We accept the weak, the sick, the disabled, the abused, the abandoned, and all those in need of a second chance. We understand the risk involved in welcoming the sick and the abandoned to our shelter, but feel the risk in refusing them is greater.
