music
Shelter Music Boston (SMB) is a local nonprofit serving men, women, and children who are homeless and struggling throughout greater Boston. Founded in 2010, SMB contracts professional musicians to present classical chamber music concerts of the highest artistic standards in homeless shelters and other sheltering environments. Our goal is to promote community, creative interaction, respect, and therapeutic benefit. We believe all people deserve access to the dignity, creativity, and passion of classical music whether or not they have a home. Current research documents the positive effects of music on physical and mental health and supports its use as a complementary tool in social service delivery. For a homeless or recovering individual, an interactive, respectful concert delivering the therapeutic power of classical music can provide hope, a sense of self-worth, and renewed energy to address the challenges of homelessness and recovery. After our concerts, shelter guests say they feel better physically, see improvements in sleep and anxiety, and gain a sense of hope and empowerment. Shelter Music Boston currently provides 80-90 concerts each year in a total of 8 locations that are dedicated to serving individuals who are homeless or in recovery throughout Greater Boston. "The music was water for my soul when it was thirsty." B., Pine Street Inn-Shattuck Shelter Guest

Shelter was founded in 2007 by six Navy Captains with extensive experience in maritime affairs. The company started its activities in the market of courses and training for the oil and gas offshore sector. The courses offered by Shelter are approved by the Brazilian Navy and the company is registered in the Petrobras list of suppliers (CRCC). The opening of a subsidiary in Santos, during 2008, brought another Retired Navy Captain to the company’s management and the courses started being offered also in São Paulo. Since its creation, Shelter has expanded its scope of activities through providing consultancy on maritime issues related to regularization and commissioning of ships as well as fixed and mobile platforms. With the success obtained in the meantime, Shelter considerably increased its gross sales and recorded the emission of more than 7,500 courses completion certificates. Attentive to the market tendencies, Shelter has consolidated international partnerships to enable a national option to: - the use of simulation in construction projects of new maritime and inland waterway terminals, and - Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Training – a worldwide system used to control vessel traffic in ports. At the moment the company is preparing to step into a training sector still considered critical for the country, seeking to become an option for excellence in preparing a skilled workforce for the oil & gas segment, complementing Brazilian government programs.
