A Sonnen Energia iniciou suas atividades no final do ano de 2012, na cidade de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. A empresa nasceu a partir da pesquisa de doutorado na área de energia solar fotovoltaica do atual diretor da empresa. A empresa iniciou suas atividades dentro da incubadora da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Seu foco inicial era atuar em projeto e instalação de sistemas fotovoltaicos. Com o tempo, acabou direcionando suas atividades para o desenvolvimento de produtos. Com muita determinação, competência e honestidade, em pouco tempo a empresa cresceu e precisou adquirir maquinários e aumentar o quadro de profissionais. Com a expansão da produtividade, o espaço físico tornou-se pequeno para atender a demanda do mercado, o que resultou na criação de um novo parque fabril fora das dependências da UFSM.
