SPARX is a fantasy-based, e-therapy program for young people experiencing mild to moderate depression or sadness. It was developed by clinical and academic experts at the University of Auckland with advice from local youths as well as Maori, Pacific and Asian cultural advisors. The game play introduces CBT (cognitive-behaviour therapy) skills, including psycho-education, relaxation, problem solving, activity scheduling, social skills and methods to challenge and overcome negative thinking. It is clinically proven to be as effective as traditional counselling. We are bringing SPARX to Canada and working with youth to co-create mobile, culturally-specific versions. SPARX Canada will address the internal barriers, such as shame and inability to verbally communicate their struggles, and external barriers, such as the shortage of traditional counsellors and the lack of access to healthcare due to living in remote areas, that youth often face. SPARX Canada will strengthen youths compassion, resilience, and connectedness by giving them the tools and resources necessary to make choices that serve their wellbeing.
