De Nieuwe Sluis gaat zorgen voor een betere toegang en vlottere doorstroming vanaf de Westerschelde naar het Kanaal van Gent naar Terneuzen en verder. Daardoor zorgt de Nieuwe Sluis voor nieuwe economische activiteiten in zowel de Zeeuws-Vlaamse als de Vlaamse regio. Dit is goed voor de werkgelegenheid. Met de komst van de Nieuwe Sluis kunnen grotere zeeschepen tot aan de haven van Gent varen door het Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen. Ook neemt de capaciteit van de sluizen toe, waardoor de wachttijd voor binnenvaartschepen afneemt. In 2024 vaart het eerste schip door de Nieuwe Sluis.
