Mission: The Literacy Project’s (TLP) mission is to eliminate the literacy gap of underserved children in low-income families who are functionally illiterate. History: Founded in 2009, The Literacy Project's vision is to bring the gift of literacy to children as a foundational learning element to help achieve their personal dreams. To accomplish its mission, The Literacy Project (TLP) accesses and enhances key phonic skills among struggling readers; promotes learning in a fun, social and interactive environment; uses proven methods to maximize the learning experience; and fosters self-sufficiency and economic success through both attitudinal and academic improvements. Recognizing both the short-and long-term social concerns directly associated with illiteracy including higher rates of school dropout, unemployment, and poverty, as well as the long-term implications of the 3rd grade reading achievement gap, TLP was established to make a significant and lasting impact. Utilizing their comprehensive literacy intervention program, TLP strives to improve reading skill levels among struggling readers in second and third grades at Title 1 schools throughout Southern California, Utah, and Arizona. Accomplishments: To date, The Literacy Project has helped more than 10,500 struggling readers throughout Orange, Los Angeles, and Coachella Valley school districts in Southern California, Utah and Arizona. By providing its signature reading program, at “no-cost” to both the students or school, TLP has proven to be incredibly effective and increase reading skills as much as 76% to 129% within a 30-hour program over six weeks. In 2012, the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE), Evaluation, Data and Assessment Center (EDAC) completed an independent review of the program. The Executive Data Summary concluded, “Tested students began the program with lower reading skills than the comparison group and tested significantly higher than non-participating students at the end of the
The Little Big Dairy Co is a family-run business, delivering high quality, award winning milk from one dairy, traceable down to the very cow that made it. It’s the smallness of our process combined with our ability to supply these substantial quantities that allow us to share our milk with many. Owned and managed by the Chesworth family on the banks of the Macquarie river in the Central West of NSW, The Little Big Dairy Co was started, in order to deliver the best-tasting, single source milk you’ll drink to as many people as possible. It’s our belief that this shouldn’t be reserved for the lucky few; it should be readily available to many, supporting the economy in which it was made. On our farm, we see the product from start to finish, milking through processing and into the bottle. This smallness, the intimacy of our process, is what guarantees the integrity, quality and health benefits of our delicious single source milk. But what really makes us special is our herd of 800 beautiful Holsteins, born and raised on our farm. Each has a name, which we know by heart. They make us who we are, and it’s their happiness and health that allow us to deliver over 8 million litres of milk every year.
