The Open Co-op

internet

The platform co-op economy is evolving as a viable alternative to the centralised, profit-hungry, extractive business model which dominates the web today. By shifting the focus toward fundamentally fairer forms of ownership and governance, and rewarding their communities instead of venture capitalists, platform co-ops provide a template for a new type of organisation – forming the building blocks for a more equitable economy. The co-operative model is far from new but, as more and more of the businesses we rely on move online, the co-operative sector must evolve to stay relevant and challenge the norms of this new digital world. By placing members at the heart of organisational ownership and governance and the development of thriving communities before profit, platform co-ops form an essential component of the transition to a transparent, democratic and decentralised economy which works for everyone. A society in which anyone can become a co-owner of the organisations on which they, their family and their community depend. A world where everyone can have say in the decisions that affect them. OPEN 2018 (26-27 July, https://2018.open.coop), will focus on three main themes: - The Platform co-op showcase will present examples from functioning platform co-ops, including practical examples of legal structures, funding and financial setups, and detailed insight from platform co-op practitioners about how their organisations work. - The Collaborative and Peer to Peer technology sessions will feature presentations on alternative digital currencies, open source tools and technology and the development of the new platforms and protocols which are enabling online co-operation to evolve at scale. - Discussions on the changing narrative will explore the co-operative vision and the evolving politics and philosophy of a world of abundance and inclusivity which underpins the creation of a more collaborative, equitable economy which works for people and planet before profit.

The Open Library Project

libraries

The Open Library Project is a non-fiction book library service offered to businesses on a subscription basis. We are trying to move away from the run- of-the-mill library concept and setting up rotational and locational libraries at co-working spaces, corporates and business incubators. The idea is to create value, build a knowledge community and encourage a growth mindset amongst our members.   How it works: We set up a set of 30-50 books at offices across various categories of non-fiction which are rotated every quarter (a refundable deposit and a small monthly fee is charged from the corporate). The thought behind this is to provide industry specific curation of books. This enables a corporate to develop exactly the kind of skill set that they want to amongst their employees. So for eg. at a Finance incubator we would set up books across business, finance, management, innovation. At a design library it would be design and design thinking books.   In addition to this we also promote peer to peer learning for which we get Curators (experts/stalwarts) on board from various industries to come and share their experiences and influences with our members. We feel that one is more likely to read a book that is recommended by a person we look up to. These events are curated across many categories like art, film, cheese education, design, finance, start-ups, travel etc. We do one event a month on a premium subscription model with these corporates for value addition. We also engage in corporate gifting of books for occasions, meetings, seminars, trainings at discounted rates.
