Ten years ago, three dreamers set out to build a restaurant in the middle of a beloved River Oaks nursery. We named it Tiny Boxwoods, after the little potted trees that can always be found throughout the garden. We didnt have enough staff to open for breakfast or lunch, so we spent the first week giving out lattes for free to anyone that walked in the door. In some ways, we had no idea what we were doing. Build a beautiful space, cook fresh, from scratch food, and then create a culture of happy employees that would be proud of the work we were doing, and then just hope people came. We wanted to create something that would become a part of peoples lives. A place they could call their happy place. With all the change and growth in the last 10 years, we remain as proud of our Tinys today as we were the day we opened. To this day, Baron Doke, Gregg Thompson, and Lance Thompson remain as close as partners can be, and watch over Tinys as if its one of their own children. We are a group of Computer Engineers and IT professionals, mostly Hong Kong graduates. After years of tutoring and teaching regular curriculum listed courses like Math and English, we felt the increasing need of Computer literacy among the young members of the society. Most children have access to smart devices and the internet. If we can inspire them to become creators instead of consumers, it will give them an upper hand in many stages of their lives. Computer programming is already being considered as a mainstream course in many countries. It will be a part of the curriculum in Hong Kong very soon, confirmed by government officials. Even though it is not a part of the curriculum in many schools in Hong Kong, it clearly deserves more importance than an extracurricular activity. Combining both creativity and logic, Computer programming is an activity that is highly productive and entertaining at the same time. It sharpens the students problem solving skills and inspires them to be imaginative. We also believe that every child is different and learns everything in a different way than others. Every child needs that extra care from a teacher who understands their needs. It is the attention that is hard to gain among a large group of students.
