Das Kundenbindungsprogramm entstand bereits 2004 als Abteilung der airberlin. Um das Wachstum und die Attraktivität des Programms weiter voranzutreiben, ist topbonus seit Ende 2012 ein eigenständiges Unternehmen, mit Etihad Airways als Mehrheitseigentümer. Aufgrund der Insolvenz von airberlin und dem unmittelbaren Zusammenhang für das Vielfliegerprogramm, hat topbonus am 25. August 2017 einen Insolvenzantrag gestellt. Der vorläufige Insolvenzverwalter Christian Otto führt den Geschäftsbetrieb im vorläufigen Insolvenzverfahren fort; der Geschäftsführer Anton Lill bleibt im Amt. Der Investorenprozess wurde aufgesetzt mit dem Ziel, einen langfristig orientierten Partner für topbonus zu finden, der das Loyalitätsprogramm fortsetzt. Es ist für topbonus Teilnehmer weiterhin möglich, bei Etihad Airways, Germania und bmi sowie bei zahlreichen Partnern am Boden Meilen zu sammeln, u.a. bei Autovermietern, Hotelportalen sowie über den topbonus Meilen-Pilot unter meilen-pilot.de Die vollständige Liste der aktiven Meilen-Partner von topbonus kann unter www.topbonus.de eingesehen werden und wird laufend aktualisiert. Außerdem können topbonus Meilensammler ihre Prämienmeilen bis 2. März 2018 bei Germania und Condor sowie im neuen topbonus Pop-up Shop einlösen.
