University College was founded in 1853 as a non-sectarian institution of higher learning and has served as a beacon for open education ever since. It is one of seven colleges that the University of Toronto comprises and is the founding college of the contemporary University. Located at the center of campus, the main University College building has been designated a National Historic Site and houses the oldest student government in Canada, the University College Literary and Athletic Society.
