historic houses association

museums and institutions

The Historic Houses Association (HHA) represents 1,600 of the UK's privately and charitably owned historic houses, castles and gardens. These are listed buildings or designated gardens, usually Grade I or II*, and are often outstanding. Many are considered to be iconic symbols of Britain's unique heritage. Around 500 of these properties open their doors to visitors for days out, special tours, school visits, film locations, weddings and events, or as memorable places to stay. 13 million people a year visit HHA Member properties and there are 38,000 Friends of the HHA. Members range from iconic stately homes such as Blenheim Palace, Highclere Castle, Castle Howard, Knebworth House, Longleat and Burghley House, to more intimate houses such as Traquair in Scotland, Treowen in Wales and Belle Isle in Northern Ireland. Most are still private family homes. The Association was established in 1973 to help owners conserve these wonderful places in the interests of the nation and carries out important lobbying, advisory and marketing work on behalf of Member properties. http://www.hha.org.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/HistoricHousesAssociation @Historic_Houses

historic houses association of australia

museums and institutions

The Historic Houses Association of Australia was formed to raise awareness and support for important local and national properties. It began in Sydney in 1988, alongside the formation of the NSW Governments Historic Houses Trust. It brought together the friends of some of Sydneys most important buildings such as Elizabeth Bay House and Vaucluse House. In 2014, the association became national and fully independent of government and is now a registered charity, not-for-profit and volunteer organisation, with a growing national membership and reach. Our goal is to educate and inform the public through a series of tours and events, to support private owners and to build an environment in which historic properties and places are supported, valued and enjoyed. We provide a forum for owners along with resources and expert advice. We advocate on their behalf to government and educate the public through a dynamic range of events and activities. We also support research to understand the special issues faced by owners of historic properties. We welcome new owners and actively seek private and corporate supporters to protect and promote our shared national heritage.

Historic Seattle

architecture & planning

Historic Seattle is a nonprofit and public development authority established by city ordinance in 1974. For 40 years Historic Seattle has shown what can be done quietly in the background with technical assistance and feasibility studies, and loudly by plunging head-on into full scale redevelopment of buildings that no one else in the community would assume responsibility to protect. As a community-based organization, Historic Seattle focuses on the reuse and reimagining of historic properties for new purposes. Historic Seattle has saved dozens of historic buildings across Seattle. Many of these buildings, highlighted in the Projects section of our website, would be gone if Historic Seattle had not taken on the risks and rewards of their rehabilitation. Historic Seattle is also a membership organization dedicated to the protection of our architectural heritage through projects, educational programming, and advocacy within the community. Historic Seattle has become the region’s foremost educator on built heritage, offering an outstanding series of lectures, workshops, tours, and specially arranged visits to historic properties. It has also greatly expanded its role to encourage activism in the preservation of important community landmarks and neighborhood character, provide resources and referral services, technical and landmarks assistance, and keep people informed of current issues and initiatives. As Historic Seattle looks toward its future, we encourage your participation in our preservation work through membership, contributions, time, and creative ideas.
