The institution was recently given approval by Cabinet to change its name to the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). The institution has six Schools/Faculties and 10 Centres of Excellence. The institution has grown from 2466 students in 1996 to approximately 13000 this year.

Responding to the ever present continuing education needs of working professionals in the country, NUST established a "Professional Development Centre"​ {PDC) in July 2007 through a Higher Education Commission (HEC) supported initiative. Objectives of this initiative are to enable working professionals to remain updated with the latest developments in their related disciplines thus enhancing their knowledge, employability and managerial skills, PDC started its operations in Dec 2007 and has so far conducted hundreds of high value workshops, short courses, and seminars in the following disciplines: • Engineering • Management & Social Sciences • Information Technology

The School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering (SMME) has been established to prepare human resource with essential skills in Mechanical Engineering and related disciplines. Its areas of specialization include Manufacturing, Automotive, Robotics and Biomedical Engineering sectors so as to prepare its graduates to perform effectively in the technological world. Though newly established, it has state-of-the-art laboratories related to its specialized fields. The School is running undergraduate programme in Mechanical Engineering and postgraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics & Intelligent Machine Engineering, Design & Manufacturing Engineering (DME) and Biomedical Engineering and Sciences. SMME has recently started Masters programme in Biomedical Engineering and Sciences from fall 2012. The programmes have been developed to address a growing concern within industry that fresh graduates do not meet the expectations of today’s corporate and industry leaders. It has been noted that the current graduates have little awareness of the actual state of the industry, its culture, and the complex interactive management and operating systems which are based on value-added effort, team performance and result oriented leadership. The graduates of SMME are trained to assist the industry in its effort to meet the challenges posed by domestic and global competition. These graduates will have the knowledge of corporate culture, its internal and external competitive pressures, leadership qualities, team performance, and an expanded understanding of technologies required for industry for effective utilization of human and financial resource. ​
