De 2e Daltonschool is een openbare basisschool waar volgens het gedachtegoed van Helen Parkhurst les wordt gegeven. Helen Parkhurst begon als leerkracht in 1904. Kinderen op de 'ouderwetse manier' lesgeven, namelijk vooral klassikaal opdreunen van wat daarvoor was voorgekauwd en uit het hoofd geleerd, wilde Parkhurst niet. Zij wilde haar leerlingen serieus nemen en zorgen dat leerlingen plezier aan het onderwijs beleefden. Helen Parkhurst koos voor een aanpak van een minimum aan lesgeven en een maximum aan zelfstudie. Zij overlegde met de leerlingen over wat hun 'eigen' verantwoordelijkheid zou kunnen zijn, en welke de rol van de leraar. De kinderen beloofden dat zij aan hun taak zouden werken en die op tijd af zouden hebben. Later werden deze ideeën toegepast in de State High School in Dalton om de efficiency van het onderwijs te verhogen. Naar deze plaats is het Daltononderwijs genoemd. Heleen Parkhurst legde haar gedachtegoed vast in het boek: "Education on the Dalton Plan" (1922). De Nederlandse Daltonidentiteit was altijd gebaseerd op 3 principes, namelijk 'Vrijheid in gebondenheid', 'Samenwerken' en 'Zelfstandigheid'. Onderwijs is echter constant in ontwikkeling. De veranderingen op het gebied van de ontwikkelingspsychologie en veranderende didactische en maatschappelijke inzichten, hebben in 2012 geleid tot een kritische bezinning op de 3 Daltonprincipes. Hieruit zijn vijf kernwaarden ontwikkeld: 'Zelfstandigheid', 'Vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid', 'Samenwerking', 'Effectiviteit' en 'Reflectie'. Bij alle Daltonkernwaarden zit een opbouw door de gehele schoolloopbaan heen. De ontwikkeling daarvan verloopt heel geleidelijk. Alles begint spelenderwijs bij de kleuters en van de kinderen in de bovenbouw wordt een grote mate van zelfstandigheid en samenwerking verwacht.
