The Singapore-ETH Centre is the only research centre established by ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, outside of Switzerland. Isaac Merritt Singer; karısının bitmek, tükenmek bilmeyen dikiş uğraşını görür ve onu bu dertten kurtarmanın yollarını arar. Narin parmakları ve güzel gözleri yorulmasın diye düşlerini gerçeğe dönüştürür ve 1850de buluşlar dünyasına müthiş bir icat ekler. 12 Ağustos 1851 yılında da bu icadı için patent alan Singer, sadece karısının değil, bu makinayı satın alabilecek herkesin yükünü azaltmış olur. Singer'in icadından önce dikiş makinaları ağır, hantal ve kullanımı zahmetlidir, sık sık bozulur, güvenilmezdir. Singer'le birlikte dikiş makinasının ağırlığı hafifler, taşıması da kullanması da kolaylaşır. Üstelik çok sağlamlaşır, ayrıca geniş bir teknik destek kadrosu hep hazır hale getirilir. Bu nedenle de Singer, hızla güven duyulan bir marka haline gelir. Isaac Merritt Singer 1811 - 1875 yılları arasında süren hayatı boyunca sadece dikiş makinalarına meraklı olmayıp; kaya delme makinası bile icat etmiştir. Dikiş makinası patentinden önce ve sonra aldığı sayısız patent olmuştur. 1857 yılında bir patlama yapmış; aynı yıl tam 12 patent birden alarak rekor kırmıştır. Singer, tüketicinin nabzını tutarak taleplere uygun ürün tasarlayan; dünyadaki ilk elektrikli dikiş makinasını, ilk elektrikli süpürgeyi, ilk hafızalı dikiş makinasını (Touch Tronic 2001), ilk bilgisayarlı dikiş makinasını, Game Boy teknolojisi ile çalışan ilk dikiş makinasını (Izek) üreten firma olur.
